Simplicity 8635 – Star Wars Romper

Today is a great day. Not only is it a Saturday (yay weekend) but it also happens to be May 4th. For all those out there that aren’t certified Star Wars nerds, this unofficial holiday was chosen for the pun on the popular catchphrase “May the force be with you” and stands as an annual celebration of all things Star Wars. If you want some more info, you can read the Wikipedia article here. All things considered, it seemed like the right time to sew up the romper version of Simplicity 8635.

Simplicity 8635 Pattern Information and Modifications:

PATTERN: Simplicity 8635, View D
FABRIC: 100% Cotton Star Wars Fabric from Joann. (This specific fabric is over two years old, but I linked all of the Star Wars fabric currently available online from Joann above.)
MODIFICATIONS: Instead of self lining the bodice, I used a cream lining. I worried that the outline of the characters might show through the light colored purple/pink background. I found the pattern to be a bit of a challenge and would not necessarily recommend it to beginners. Simplicty 8635 calls for an invisible zipper but I switched to an exposed zipper out of necessity (a.k.a. I needed more room! haha). I also made a major adjustment to the back of the bodice. After looking at a few pictures online and trying on my partially finished garment, I noticed some serious gaping on either triangle below the ties. I moved those back panels down a bit to eliminate the extra fabric, which did help a good bit. One last modification – I sewed a blind hem for the shorts as I personally prefer the look of a blind hem.

Have you used this pattern before? Did you have any fit issues with the back or is that just a a symptom of my short-waisted self?! Ha! Leave a comment and let me know.
